I wonder what it would be like if we stopped thinking about what other people are doing and what has already been done?
Nowadays, when we have an idea, we almost automatically browse the Internet to look for it. We check social media, we google it, we start to feel discouraged, because everything has already been done.
And what if we were to work and develop our ideas like we wouldn’t have access to all this information?
Just think, for hundreds of years people had no other choice. They started writing books, painting pictures, creating businesses, inventing new things, creating new theories without knowing what is happening in the world. They had no idea that somewhere there, on the other side of the globe, someone else was working on exactly the same idea.
They did their thing, released the finished product into the world and let it live its own life. Some were called great discoverers, and other names we do not know at all.
Take the theory of evolution. Did you know that another scientist was working on it at the same time as Darwin? Alfred Russel Wallace created the theory of evolution at the same time as Darwin, which pushed Darwin to publish it sooner and that is why it is attributed to his name.
There are more such examples, because it is not possible that only one person in the whole world has this one unique idea. Let us look at literature, for example. All novels revolve around the same themes, but each of them is different, each showing us a different angle.
This is why I wonder if what many of us call research, and I call it looking for reasons not to do what we should be doing, is a good idea.
In my opinion, we should allow ourselves to create without comparing, without looking for other creations of our idea. Let our vision find its place in the world. After all, our work will always be unique because it is ours. Nobody can look at the world as we do.
Somewhere out there, in the big wide world, there is someone who is waiting for our vision, for our creation, for our unique view of the world. Let’s not take this opportunity away from them.
