To buy or not to buy?

At the beginning of this year I promised myself not to buy any new books for the whole year. Just read from my shelves, from my e-book subscription and from the library. It went well, I only bought a couple of e-books I needed for some research, but I have a feeling that my to-read pile isn’t in any way smaller. Well, it’s hard to say, really, as my to-read books are still in boxes.

I miss buying books and my want-to-read list on Goodreads is growing rapidly, but I want to keep reading from my own shelves as long as possible. I wish I could read all the books that are waiting first, before I buy anything new. I don’t think it’s possible as there are a few books I really want to read and have them on my shelves. So coming January I’ll be buying a few books for sure.

There’s also an idea my husband had, to buy one book for every three read from the to-read pile. I think I’ll apply this strategy next year. This will help me to keep making my to-read pile smaller and still have a pleasure of bringing new books home.

How do you cope with the always growing to-read pile?
