Write It All Down

When I saw that Cathy Rentzenbrink has written a book about memoir writing I immediately knew I had to read it. As I couldn’t wait till January, I asked Bluebird for a proof copy and they kindly sent me (digital) one. And I’m so glad they did!

I was hoping that this book will help me overcome my mental blockages and help me get to the page. But it turned out to be more than that. It looks like Cathy wrote this book especially for me. With every page I had the feeling that she knew me and was talking to me about my specific problems.

Write It All Down is not a standard “how to write” book, it’s not about the story arc, the three act structures, nor about the hero’s journey. It’s not about the technicalities of writing, it’s about the process. It’s about the writer herself, finding her way to her story and to the page, and staying at it even when she doesn’t yet know where it’s all going.

This book is exactly what I needed at this time. The time when I lost the sight of the story I was writing, the time when I wanted to throw in the towel. Just at that moment there she comes, all in white (and blue) and helps me understand the workings of writer’s mind and gets me back to the page.

I’ll give it a week to sink in and then I’m going in for a re-read. It’s a book I want to have on my shelves. A book to come back to over and over again. This book is like your best writing coach, a friend and a mentor in one package.

Thank you, Cathy for writing this book for me. And thank you, Bluebird for the proof copy.
